The Masks We Wear

**In honor of Halloween, the one holiday where everyone tries to be something that they aren't, I decided to write this post.**

We all have a variety of masks that each of us wears daily. These may be the identities that have been given to us, or ones that we have assumed over time.

As long as we recognize that we are wearing a mask we should be in good shape. But when the mask becomes a seeming reality for us, then that's when trouble begins. We confuse the mask with the person, and if we are to consummate enough, so do those around us. Gradually the mask becomes a trap, and we become the mask.

I see so many people who wear masks in their every day lives. They attempt to be something or someone that they are not, failing to realize that sometimes who they are under the mask is better than any mask that they can attempt to wear. It's easy to believe that we we really are is simply not good enough.

On the flip side not every use of a mask is negative, however. Masks can help us build our own defenses for the time we need them. They can give us power, or at least the illusion of fortitude, in a time when we may feel powerless. As long as the masks remain flexible and breakable, we can alter them at will, still realizing that we are not what we wear on our face as the mask we present to others.

This is true. All too often the mask is mistaken for person. I wouldn't be so quick to say that it is that person's fault because sometimes it is what interpreter sees. Sometimes we are so quick to judge someone and we fail to want to get to know the person behind the mask. And I admit I've been guilty of that once or twice.
But I think we all need to check ourselves especially before we try to say someone is wearing a mask.

this was an interesting read. i didn't know you could be so perceptive! lol...no, i did. this blog post hit home for me because for a long time, i was wearing a mask but it wasn't a positive one. it was one covering all types of wilted emotions. it is important to know when to put your mask away and know that you are enough without the mask. so, release your inner mask! LOL...peace!

An interesting read. It made me examine myself. We often do put on masks to cover hurt or to let people know that you can't punk us down. I've learned that without the mask, I am real and there's nothing wrong with me. So what's the point of the mask...

At one point in my life, I had perfected the art of wearing a mask. I took it off for like 5 ppl, and those are the folks who really knew me. Wearing a mask got to be exhausting, so I took it off & put it on the shelf.

Great topic btw! (and we're even now too...)

Wow, this post really resonated with me. I am constantly wearing a mask of well, I don't even really know what to call it; it just isn't me. I am hoping to one day take off the mask and have people accept me for who I really am. I'm so much more interesting than people think I am and I really do feel "trapped" because I feel like I can't show my true self without getting side-eyed or screw faces.

I've been protecting myself from hurt and ya know, it actually hasn't worked. I am starting to see that this whole "mask" thing is not benefitting me the way I'd subconsciously hoped. I have missed out on so much...love, life, happiness, but most of all love. And I want to allow myself those opportunities before it's too late. I'm telling you, you really hit the nail on the head with this one. Of course I've heard of the mask concept before, but never like this...

anonymous: my advice to you would be to shed this "mask" and show who you really are. there is nothing more refreshing than being able to let your guard down. it's not an easy thing to do but once it's done it can be rejuvenating.

even though you may feel like you've missed out on a lot it's never too late. :-)
